Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona: sloppy set-piece defending and full-back positioning

Reminder that my book Zonal Marking is out this week… Liverpool produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final, having lost the first leg 3-0 at the Camp Nou. As always with Liverpool’s European victories at Anfield, the win was credited to emotion, atmosphere and history. While those factors are certainly...

Barcelona 5-1 Real Madrid: Barca rampant down the left, ending Lopetegui’s brief reign

Barcelona dominated throughout the first half and during the final 20 minutes, although Real’s half-time change of system nearly rescued the game. Ernesto Valverde was without Leo Messi, and left Ousmane Dembele on the bench. Julien Lopetegui’s main problem was the absence of Dani Carvajal, which meant Nacho continued at right-back.

Valencia 0-5 Real Madrid: ruthless counter-attacking puts Real five up by half-time

Real Madrid produced one of their finest performances under Jose Mourinho. Valencia coach Ernesto Valverde was without David Albelda and Joao Pereira, so Fernando Gago played a very deep midfield role, and Ricardo Costa was forced to move to right-back. Jose Mourinho named Fabio Coentrao rather than Marcelo at left-back alongside an unfamiliar centre-back combination, and...
