Group A

Tottenham 3-0 Werder Bremen

Tottenham defended well against Werder Bremen on Wednesday night, completing 15 from 19 attempted tackles.

Inter 1-0 Twente

Wesley Sneijder plays in a central attacking midfield role for Inter, but always likes to drift to the left. This chalkboard of his received passes shows how many are played into that inside-left channel.

Group B

Hapoel Tel-Aviv 3-0 Benfica

Hapoel Tel-Aviv's shock win over Benfica was helped by plenty of last-ditch defending, including ten blocks in or around the penalty area

Schalke 3-0 Lyon

Despite Schalke's impressive victory over Lyon, they frequently lost the ball when their attackers tried to beat opponents - only one of 20 attempted take-ons was successful

Group C

Rangers 0-1 Manchester United

Rangers' interceptions against Manchester United all took place in central areas, and surprisingly high up the pitch

Valencia 6-1 Bursaspor

Valencia played a 4-4-2 formation with two central strikers, so tried to cross the ball a lot more than usual. However, only two out of 17 crosses found their intended target.

Group D

Panathinaikos 0-3 Barcelona

It was the usual passing masterclass from Barcelona as they eased to a 3-0 victory in Athens. Andres Iniesta and Xavi were having their own passing battle in the Barcelona midfield - Iniesta triumphed by a single pass.

Rubin Kazan 1-0 Copenhagen

Copenhagen sat very narrow, so the majority of Rubin

Group E

Basel 1-0 Cluj

Basel showed a clear desire to attack predominantly down the right - over three-quarters of their crosses were played in from that flank.

Roma 3-2 Bayern

Roma changed their formation at half-time at 0-2 down to Bayern, from a 4-3-1-2 to a 4-3-3. As a result, they crossed from positions level with the penalty area (right, second half) rather than in deeper zones (left, first half) and two goals were created in this manner

Group F

Chelsea 2-1 Zilina

Young central midfield Josh McEachran completed more passes than any other player during Chelsea

Spartak 0-3 Marseille

Mathieu Valbuena played a central attacking midfield role, but spent most of the game drifting to the flanks

Group G

Ajax 0-4 Real Madrid

Real Madrid's attacking players ran rings around Ajax - 20 out of 28 attempted take-ons were successful

Auxerre 0-2 Milan

Milan's clean sheet was based upon plenty of successful tackles - 17 out of 20

Group H

Partizan 0-3 Shakhtar

Shakhtar attacked predominantly down the left in their win over Partizan Belgrade, but both the passes that created goals were played from the opposite flank.

Braga 2-0 Arsenal
